Well me working at a local petstore that has been open for 51 years(family owned and I have been working there for about a year now) we are very knowledgeable.When I don't know a answer to a question I go and ask the older employee's.I see the reputation petstore's get about that they give bad information and how they keep animals.Sure not every petstore is going to be knowledgeable but not all of them are bad.Also people complian that how petstore's keep animals.Sure we may keep them in simplistic setup's(not to confuse with overcrowding or way to small of a enclosure) but truth is if we have a full setup and the actual size the animal really needs we'd have no room to house enough animals to make a good profit.Anyway's I would like to know your very own expirence with petstore's rather it be good or bad.

Most or almost all pet stores have good features and bad features to them. I used to deal with pet shops and not so much anymore. There's always some nice display animals and then there are always other animals that are suffering. I don't think there is a such thing as a perfect pet store. I think thats because cooperate/moms and pops pet stores are looking to profit. I've never seen a pet store owner refuse a customer even though knowing that the customer would likely kill/mistreat/mishandle/ the animal.

There are passionate breeders out there that don't look to profit and put the animals 1st before the money. Ethics like that you can not beat. I used to work at a pet store and man that was short lived! There are some pet stores that really try but still fail here and there.

I really don't want to say what I think about pet stores. Watch the video!

most suck. Most don't bother to even read some of the books they sell to gain a rudimentary idea of the needs of the animals they sell.

Occasionally, if a store happens to have an interested and engaged individual managing their herp department, they can do very good work. This can happen at a large chain store or a mom-and-pop store, but it's rare.

However, pet shops have cool stuff. They have tanks upon tanks and much other cool stuff I don't need but buy anyways. My dog agrees. She gets very excited when we go to a pet store. She starts barking hysterically when we drive into the parking lot and sees the store sign. I swear she can read the word "pet" (she barks for pet smart, petco and pet zoo).

Inside the store she runs up to every sales person and shakes or speaks or starts to play dead or rolls over, because she knows these people hand out treats. Once, she knocked over a whole giant display of plastic aquarium plants because she smashed into it while rolling over for a sales person who had treats.

selling dead,dog }

Yea I do understand what you mean Jaymes but my store in specific refuse to sell the animal to the person if they don't know what they're doing.We try to sell them all the supplies they need for the animals survivial.Then agian not all do like you said.Yes the pacman frog is dead.Who knows what really killed it.Could of came sick,had internal parisite,inpropercare,ect.many diffrent factors that the petstores couldnt do or maybe it was the petstore's fault.And yes molch most dogs seem to like comeing to my store too lol.There's this huge rotwiller boxer mix(the friendliset dog ever) and he always likes to go play with thte bunnies and watch the birds.Then his owner buys him a treat.

Re: What do you think of petstore's?

There are so many pet stores in the world there are bound to be good ones and horribles ones, its hard to have an opinion on stores in general. I know the people at the nearby petsmart are very knowledgeable and they are honest if they don't know something rather than make an answer up.

We have a pet supplies plus that is much closer. I usually buy crickets from this place because I can ride my bike there. I've never asked herp questions at this place and we usually go there to get our dog groomed. However, when my dad went there a while ago to pick up the dog from the grooming station he found a baby bearded dragon on the floor that had escaped its cage! He gave it to them but I wan't there personally to have any guess as to why it escaped. Poor dragon wanted out of that tiny tank.

The problem is that a lot of pet stores hire teenagers and young adults to work for them. These people are unlikely to have any past experience so when they learn about the job they only do what must be done. So learning how to throw crickets into a cage and clean the tank could be the most education a new employee gets. Cats and dogs also suck a lot of attention away from reptiles and amphibians. I could easily see a dog enthusiast getting a job and not be willing to give the herps at the store the care and attention they deserve because they aren't "cute" in their eyes.

Yes petstore's hire young people(I'am 14).But I always loved animals and been around them.About the baby bearded dragon.Given a chance any animal will escape there enclosure.I'am sire that the bearded dragon's tank was small but that was temperary housing.Also I learned alot just by working at one.I get to meet new people,meet new animals,hear stories about peoples expirence's,and got expirence from there.Plus my store dose'nt have dogs or cats.(I know you were saying dog enthusiest but I was just saying lol).But yes not every petstore is good.

    Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
