Ok so I have recieved tonnes of conflicting advice about this.

I use a waterfall external filter. At the moment I have a sponge which covers just over half the outlet and carbon thingies in a bag on the other half. Theres a plastic divider thing in there as well. I also have ceramic chips and a bag for them but I have decided my coarse sand is a good enough bacterial trap, so I haven't had those in there for months. My tank parameters are pretty stable so far.

What do you have/recommend? Thanks.

I have a Fluval canister filter, and, in addition to the sponges, I use 3 things: filter carbon, polyester floss, and biofiltration media (ceramic tubes). I don't think there is any right or wrong answer - the main function of a canister filter is done by the sponges, anything else is just there to make us feel good.
