What do i need for a sponge filter

You just need an air pump which oxygenates it and helps the beneficial bacteria. You will also need to tubing which you can buy online or at most aquatic pet shops to connect the two. I also buy non-return valves in case my air pump ever falls off the stand. If it is placed below the fish tank then the water could run through the pipe and into the air pump, these stop that from happening. So... Air pump, tubing & optional non return valve.

The non return valve?

Mine came with an arrow in it to show which way the air is pushed through. You can blow into both ends and one direction lets you blow air through and the other won't.

I dont use the valve, if you buy a good pump like Whisper the pump doesn't make nose of vibrate alot so it stays in its place. Mine you can barley hear it and it never moves.

Still if he place it too low and power outage happens it could end up quite bad for axies.
Especialy when left with 10% water and 90F outside temperature.

For example if u r using glass cover with fully filled water and u r thinking how safe it is to not jump out.
Than power outage happen and water somehow make it that 1cm to the edge and u end up with ~dry aqua.
These are not happy stories how fast water can become toxic.
