I think it's less to do with genetics and more to do with the interaction between yellow (xanthophores) and dark (malanophores) pigments. An animal with lots of bright yellow under less dark will appear more green, and an animal with less yellow will have a darker appearance. Both can be distributed in different densities across the animal, resulting in a wide variety of color options in wildtypes.
