i bought a taricha torosa in the earlier part of april ( and yes i know that they aren't supposed to appear in the trade). anyways, it detested water so rearranged the aquaterraria so it resembled a forest floor, and placed a bowl of water. he seemed to thrive but, 3 weeks ago he started to get black spots on his back and refused to eat. i thought that it would have something to to with shedding problems or that he was ready to enter an aquaria as it is breeding time. so i rearranged everything, this tme 7/8's of the aquarias area was waterfilled. he seemed a lot more happier and after just a day i could see his sheded skin (past tense of shedding?) hanging from his body and arms.
as a result the black spots has dissapeared. so my obvious question is; what could have caused those black spots? was it shedding problems or fungal infections? an answer would be apreciated :)

p.s. sorry for my bad english, not born in an english speaking country so i'll probably never get myself really understood

Your English is perfectly understandable. It sounds like your newt is very well cared for. As for the black spots there have been several posts about them in the past. Some of those can be found here, here and here.

To give you a summary, it appears these black spots sometimes appear on Taricha before they shed and we don't really have a good explanation why. I would assume if they disappear with a shed they are nothing to worry about.

yeah all my tarichas get the black spots and then shed. probably where the skin is coming loose.

I'll just echo what everyone else has said. My Taricha don't get the black spots every time, but maybe 3/4 of the time, they get a 'dirty' look about them, just before they shed.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
