Hi, I got a second axolotl when it was 2 months old...but obviously I couldn't tell if it was male or female. It turned out to be female now that it's about 9 months old..the problem is I have a 2 year old male and originally I wanted to put them into the same tank. I have a tank divider.

Do axolotls recognize each other and know the other is a female/male? They've never interacted with each other before. how often have people have their axos breed regardless of a divider?

I remember hearing something about keeping the water at a certain temperature to prevent breeding. Is there any fact behind this claim?

Sorry I guess I wished I only need to clean one tank...not two...boo

A divider is a great preventive tool but it's not fool proof. Somehow, someway there have been a few that find a way to get around it and take care of business. Keeping a tank on the higher end of acceptable temperatures will turn off alot of axolotls but not all of them.

Axolotls are pretty keen on breeding, the only way to prevent it completely is to keep them completely seperated. Even though they may not seem to pay attention, I wouldn't suggest putting them together unless you want them to breed. I don't think the temps will prevent breeding, because I've read plenty of occassions where Axolotls laying eggs under any conditions.

You'd be surprised at how much it has an effect. For an example, just take a look through the classified sections and you'll notice that during the summer months and early fall you'll see very little, if any. baby axie ads. But like I said, it's not a fool proof method.

Mine produced eggs after a warm spell, when the temperature dropped the eggs appeared. My second batch occurred while they where separated by a divider, one managed to get over/ through. I personally wouldn't keep separate sexes this way, I believe pheramones are produced which will potentially upset your axolotl.
