Hi people,

We have had our little axolotl for around 18 months now, although he isnt that little anymore. He lives in a 90l tank and seems very happy and active all the time. Hes had various tank mates in the past ranging from apple snails to guppys, but they've always ended up as either food or hes bullied them to death. His tank has a selection of live and artificial plants and we try and keep it as clean as possible. We had a filter in there at first but he really didnt like the flow and sulked a lot so it went. We're interested in getting a hang on back waterfall style filter to just add a little extra filtration, but I'm struggling to find a good one or much info on them.

Could anyone please suggest a UK attainable model which would be suitable for our 90l tank?

Many thanks,
Lewis

All Pond Solutions do a range of HOB/Waterfall filters. I've got the mid-range one for a 50litre tank, but haven't set it up yet. One of the plastic edges is jagged, but that's purely cosmetic. I don't know how it's going to hold up yet. (The middle model doesn't have sponges either, just carbon and an area for bacteria to grow I'm tempted to replace with balls. You'd probably want the largest one though, and that does have sponges.)

Alternatively, you can get hold of Eheim Liberty's from Zooplus or Vitamin Grocer UK (but they're shipped from the US - free shipping over £20.00 )

...I think I saw an aquamedic one that looked really good, but it was about £90.00.

I still don't know what I'm doing about filters yet. I've got on to considering a canister...

^ Found the Vitamin Grocer one.

I'm actually currently trying to see if I can get this model ordered in by my local pet store (it was listed in their supplier's catalogue, but presently out of stock). I don't think Eheim have introduced them to the UK market, sadly. It's not in their aquarium guide.

I have from all pond solutions (the largest) got it from ebay. They are not too bad they stir the water enough but not too much, they also help with cooling. Due to the way the filter is designed you have to clean them pretty often to stop the water skipping past the filter and i had to stab the carbon pad with a fork for the same reason. All in all not bad for the price and the axys dont mind them (they sometimes swim up under ours)
