I just wondered if anyone has had any experience with warmish water temperature in winter due to central heating? My tank IS NOT near the radiator but even so....the temp is still higher than I would like, it's about 74!!!! I've turned the radiators off so hopefully it will cool down.

Now for a stupid question

Could I take a couple of buckets of water out of my tank and stand it outside (monitor the temp of course) for a few mins to cool it down, or is this not advisable?

Yes, you could cool it down that way.

You can also cool the water a couple of degrees (depending on the humidity) by blowing a fan across the top of the water.

That's ok then, I'll try both. Cheers.

Yes 74 degrees is certainly in the danger zone for axolotls! Can you do a partial water change for an immediate fix? Like remove some water from the tank and replace it with cold water until the temp in the tank is under 70? In the long term have you used aquarium fans? They may help you out here. Immediate action is definitely needed though, your axolotls will not survive at current temps.

Joanne, I just wanted to post up that I'm in a similar situation.

My current tank is a 10 gallon, and it's sitting right along a wall that is effectively an exterior wall...there's also a window near it. That tank in my basement sits at about 65 degrees all the time...we keep the thermostat in the house set at 68.

However, the 20 long I'm setting up for the little creature is sitting along an interior wall, and to add to that, it's the wall that is directly opposite the furnace in our utility room.

I've noticed that in that spot, that tank is running nearly 70 degrees. I'm guessing it's because of two things, being in that warmer spot along a warmer wall is giving it more radiant heat, and I also am running a much more powerful canister filter that most likely gives off a bit more heat.

I'm currently debating if I should just spend the money on the chiller now...of if the 70 degrees will be okay. I'm actually guessing that the spot will be COOLER in the summer, as the furnace won't be running at all.

Thanks for your replies guys. I've had both my axies checked out this last week and both are ok, I did enquire about a chiller and a fan but got told that if they aren't showing signs of being stressed in the tank, then they should be ok , I have done my normal weekly water change and that dropped the temperature, also I've turned the central heating down too, I got told if I want to reduce the temperature even more then use ice cubes or stand a bucket full of the tank water outside for a bit and cool it down like that, (obviously monitor the temp tho). Hope the tips help you gimpdiggity.
