Water temperature

hey all, the temperature in my axo tank is rising now due to the increase in temp in australia at the moment, its 23 currently, ive been using freezer blocks to bring it down to 20 but it goes up to 22/23 shortly after they defrost, ne other methods? coolers are so expensive

Hey where u live. Im in sydney and the weather is just terrible for my poor axies. Both are realy stressed out because my water reaches 24 degres. I put 1L bottle of coke filled with water then frozen into the tank which helps bring it down. It lasts around 1-2 days but it just rises again. I think that could be stressfull for them ( the rise and drop in water temp). I would like some advice on kkeeping the water cool or how to make a home made cooler.

im curerntly thinking about 2 computer fans to bring down the temp!?! wat do you think?

I think better to put him in the fridge until you can get something to bring down the temp.
Before I got my air conditioned I used to have my fridge full of axies for one month almost. The up and down of the temperatures will stress really quick your axie.

Ye but isnt that stess full having them in the fridge. it will be like solitary confindment and plus my dad will think its food and eat it, lol. My mum will freak out tho so i dunt think i can.

it´s not stressful for axies to be in the fridge , if the temperature isn´t to low , like 10 Cº it´s fine , but as I said , on my post that I have an air conditioned that solved the problem cause I have more animals in different tanks that need low temperatures and it is cheap to buy an air conditioned then a cooler for every tank. isn´t cheap to buy an air conditioned, in your country?

What do you mean those air cons that go on the walls for the room or you mean speciel ones for the tank? im confused. anyway wat about fans?
thanks joao

i live in queensland mate, in a town called toowoomba, i have put a big fan on my tank now an it is lowering and maintaining the temperature for now...

ye i live in sydney, man it must get hot up ther in queens. yhe im thinking about the fan but my mum prob wont let so im gonna get computer fans, lol.

if the temperature is really high computer fans won´t work. And stipe puric , yes I mean that "thing that goes on the walls" .

yeah i have now put a real big fan like a room fan on my tank and it lowered the temp from 22/23 to 19 degrees so yeah i think problem solved i hope...

gud work, im gonna open the windows because its raining now adn its pritty cold.

Hey Paul, this might be a dumb question, but do you put the fan just going onto the side of the tank? like, blowing against the glass? or do you have to take the lid off and have the fan blowing onto the actual water? i live in queensland, and my water is 23 degrees.

Pij, u need to take off the glass and put the fan blowing onto the water, my temp was 23 degrees and a big fan will drop it to 19 which part of qld do u live in

i tryed the fan idea adn it caused the water to move too much, even on low. i found that that stressed my axies, so i stopped. still looking for good ideas.

A fan across the water doesn't cause current IN the water, just across the surface. I've had a fan on my tank for months at a time.

you could also move him with the tank to the basement (if you have one)/ a cooler part of the house over the summer months??? but if its down to 19 i wouldnt worry too much now, its much better than before :D

i live in cairns and my tank can get up to 27 degrees, i use a fan blowing across the surface of the water, which brings it down considerably. i dont add water bottles because it changes the temperature of the water to much. i moved my tank in to the main bedroom because thats the coolest part of the house. when it gets really hot i keep the room dark all day so this does not stress my axie. i also keep a close monitor of the condition of my water when its hot because the higher temperatures can cause problems.

Hey everyone,
i replaced the glass lid on my tank with wire mesh, and that gradually lowered the temperature from 27 degrees (don't worry - there isn't any axolotls in there yet) to 24 degrees. Then i put a flat, sealed container full of ice on top of the wire mesh, with a tea towel on top to keep it cold, and that has so far (very slowly) lowered the temperature to 21 degrees. Success!

you could also try making a home made cooler! im making one of those, this is how its gonna work (i hope it works

)

if you have a filter, instead of it pumping back into the water, you attach a pipe that will carry the filtered water through an eskie(filled with ice,(the pipe gets through a homemade hole in the side)) wind through the ice for a while, (enough for the water to cool down) then back out a home made hole in the eskie and evenly spreading the now cold water back into the tank!

GREAT!
