Hello. I'm thinking ahead to when my red-spotted eft changes to its aquatic form. He's native to my region, so I was wondering if it would be safe or helpful to get water from a pond in a local nature preserve when I set up an aquarium? Or is it better to just start from scratch with distilled water, etc.?

You can get from a pond, but keep in mind that there could be dangerous things in the water such as disease. That’s why many people use their tap water treated to dechlorinate and maybe lower the hardness. Many people do a wild tank ecosystem though so it isn’t a crazy idea! You can also use pure water such as R/O or Distilled but you will have to treat both with mineral additions.
