Help! I rinsed My filter media like someone told me too in the water in the tank, but a day or two later all my water parameters were wrong! I took my lotls out of the tank cause they didn’t look like they were doing too hot in it and now I got them Tubbed in water I completely change out usually twice a day, once 1 time a day on like tuesday but that’s because I had work really late. But what can I do to fix my water? It’s been almost a week and the ammonia is at like .25 ppm, nitrites are at 0 ppm, and nitrates are at 40 ppm. I shook every bottle in my API freshwater Master test kit REALLY well before using them, especially the second step bottle for the nitrates and while it looks better than on the day I took them out, since the nitrites are at 0 ppm now, the other seem like they got worse.

Also, I used some proper ph 7.5 in the tank because the pH said it was 8.0 in the tank and it didn’t change the ph at all and left powdery stuff that refuses to leave the bottom of the tank, is it okay for the lotls to touch that stuff when I put them back in? I’ve done lots of water changes trying to get the other issues in check faster and that white powder stuff is STILL there 3 changes later. Idk if you can see it in the picture but it’s all over the bottom, normally the bottom is shiny.

Also again, I was thinking of getting some of those little betta balls and one of those little betta potted plants they had at pet smart for my tank to help with the bacteria, 1; are those little potted plant things okay for axolotls? 2; how many betta balls should I get? 3; how long should I keep them in my quarantine tank before I put them in the main tank? Like a week?

I would link the little potted plants things I was talking about but I can’t find them online, I found the betta balls listed but not the potted plants.

Okay first dont try and mess with pH using powders its so unreliable. Botanicals can help lower ph - things like driftwood, Indian Almond leaves etc. What is the pH of your tap water? and the ammonia of your tap water? Some people have a consistent 0.25ppm ammonia reading but its more of a false reading as their tank is fully cycled.
