I was at my lfs getting water for my axolotl tank because my water at my house has to much ammonia or whatever. the guy at the store said that i could just use culligan water like you would get at the store in those big jugs... i was wondering if that water would really be safe for him? help if you can please

Axolotls should not be put into softened water. They do better with some dissolved minerals ( tell your LFS).

Usually tap water contains chlorine and chloramine. This must be removed. The usual way is to add a water conditioner (also used in water for fishtanks) . your LFS can sell you this.

Ammonia is given off by the axolotl. We give off ammonia in our urine. We can walk away from it. The axolotl will be swimming about in it. You have to remove the ammonia from the water so that your axolotl is not poisoned by it. There are two ways to get rid of it. 1. Do a large water change every day (remember to add water conditioner to the new water). Or 2. Install a biological filter system. It takes 6 to 8 weeks to establish a beneficial bacteria colony in the filter that will turn the ammonia into nitrite and then into less harmful nitrate. This is what we all do. You will need to study 'cycling'. There are plenty of threads on this subject.
Hope that clears some of your confusion?

Just to clarify, did they tell you the water in your tank had to much ammonia or the water coming out of your tap had to much ammonia?

If it is your tank, then use the advice from above. if the water in your tank has to much ammonia you just need to do more frequent larger water changes,it has nothing to do with your tap water. and you should not use softened water(filtered/bottled water)
If its your water I hope to dear god you are not drinking it :S I have seen some people, expecially if they are on well water, that their water has high amounts of ammonia in it(due to farm run off, doesnt that sound lovely?)and they need to use bottled water, adding dissolved minerals into the water to make it a bit harder.

Did you bring your tap water in to get tested or your tank water?
