What is the ideal water depth for an adult axolotl? Do they mind if the water is shallow, or do they prefer deeper water to swim up and down in?

Go for deeper water. I doubt they would complain about more space to swim about. In their natural habitat the lake can be quite deep. Plus the more water volume you have, the slower your nitrate readings will rise. So less/not as much water volume when you do water changes.

The depth should be atleast be the same as the axolotls width

At least as deep as your axie is long, if not twice as deep.
So a 10" axies will want a minimum of a foot deep, if not two.

(My 9-10" adults are in 18", my 5" juvies are in 12-15")

Sorry, length*

Like Hayley said. With more water it is easier to maintain water quality. The deeper the better.
