Hi guys,

I’m currently cycling a 20 gallon tank for my new axolotl. I have been cycling it for a week and am starting to see nitrites. I have plants in there including hornwort, a sponge filter and a small quietflow internal power filter. I am picking up my axolotl on the 5th and don’t know if this tank will be ready in time.

My friend has a 10 gallon tank that she said I could borrow. If I made my axolotl a temporary home in there with no filter, how much water should I change and how often?

Do you think this is a good idea? Or do you have advice about finishing my tank cycling with my axolotl in the 20 gallon?

Thanks for your help!

Personally I would keep the axie out of the cycling tank, and either use a tub or the 10 gallon temporarily. Since it's 10 gallons you probably wouldn't have to do 100% changes. Make sure you have a liquid master test kit, test it every day and do water changes accordingly. A smaller tub might be easier to manage, but you will have to do 100% water changes every day.

Thank you, that’s very helpful! I feel more at ease that way, keeping her out of the cycling tank until it’s done. And I have the master test kit, so I’ll use that to make sure I’m changing enough water. :)

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
