Okay, so it's been maybe 2 weeks since my golden boy started to actually look like a boy (or constipated girl!)+ about 4 days since the lovely people on Caudata decided that he is a boy + then yesterday, he decided to prove it + was seperated (plus, I turkey bastered any little sperm packets he left from the tank). I was waiting until this weekend, so I could set up my other 3ft tank, but have spent too much money, so he's been transfered into a bucket instead!
This morning, Canaq (the wild-type girl) has laid spawn, so I obviously wasn't quick enough - I am very surprised at how quick it has all been though!
The axies were 1 year old in February, so I didn't want any eggs until after July, but it's happened now.

How often do they lay? Can I put the golden boy back in with Canaq for a little while, or would that likely result in more eggs too soon?

What's the best way to remove the eggs? Can I turkey baster them safely, or do I need to try to scoop with a little net? I can't just transfer the decor that they're on, coz they're everywhere! On all the plants + the filter / air pump lines!

I'm guessing that they're wild-type eggs, as they all look dark in the middle - is that right?

Cheers guys ;)

Re: Was Quick Enough

They can lay almost continuously.

If you put them together, they'll start spawning again immediately.

The eggs are tough! I give them a couple of hours, and once they firm up, I pull them off by hand. You'll never be able to turkey-baster them off.

No, the reason the eggs are dark in the middle is because the mother is dark. They could, genetically, be any color the parents are both carrying genes for.

Re: Was Quick Enough

So, it's pot luck them :(

And, as suggested in previous threads, despite having only 3 axies, there are indeed currently everywhere! The boy is in isolation for being a naughty, randy boy :p The golden girl is in isolation to allow healing + Canaq is in a tank of eggs. Phew!
I guess next week I'll be getting filter + airstone for the other tank. More plants... They're getting expensive, LoL! :p

Re: Was Quick Enough

Remember, you don't have to raise the eggs. There are ways of getting out of raising them!

I'd go along with the idea that you don't have to raise any of the eggs. If you raised your adults from eggs you already know the challenges you faced with just a few (I started with 10). So, decide if you want to make the commitment before you leap in. Otherwise, I would suggest leaving the eggs where they are and letting nature take its course.

Well, I've removed them (partly because I wanted to do a big tank clean-up) - they are all dark on 1 side + light on the other.
I've just submitted a thread in the sale section + will be doing the same elsewhere too. I personally wouldn't have chosen to have axie eggs to raise, but I will TRY at least, if I need too.

I like having an animal-filled house, but at the moment, there are only 3 rooms that haven't got at least 1 animal in them (including the bathroom!) in my house, LoL! My bedroom has 4 snakes, the lounge has 1 axie / 1 hamster / 1 snake (plus, currently, the German Shepherd, who can go into any of the rooms downstairs), the kitchen has 2 snakes / 1 GAL snail / 50 cherry shrimp / 1 axie / 200-300 axie eggs + the back room has 1 healing axie. Phew! ;)

Not Mojo, because I'm female :p
I'm not keeping any for myself deliberately, as I want an adult leucy boy to keep my golden boy company + I think 4 is my maximum for the moment. But, I will try to raise any that don't get sold as eggs + just keep advertising them around - unless any prove to be such an adorable little character that I have to keep him / her (must keep sensible head on!!!)

lol yeh sure u wont keep any

When would you be able to tell what colour they will be, is it whilst they are still in the egg or a few days/weeks after they have hatched?

Re: Was Quick Enough

You can get a good idea while they're in the eggs, but usually you have to wait until they're a couple weeks old to be for sure. Wildtypes/melanoids/leucistics all look very similar in the eggs, as do all the albino types. Once they hatch, you can discern wildtypes/leucistics from melanoids because of the lack of eye ring, but to tell wildtypes from leucistics you have to wait until they grow a little bit, same with albinos.
