Washing sand

Ok,I got some filter sand,it arrives today,I did a search to see what people recommended as the best method to wash it,but got boggled with posts on different coloured sand.My plan is to do it in parts in a bucket running the water into it and mixing it around til the water is clear, like my fishtank gravel,is that the go?

i did that but tried the pillow cases the other day. much easier! chuck the sand in there, put the hose in, move it round till the water runs clean and your done!

i have to say that after doing 25kg "in parts" in pillow cases last time, this time i did the whole 25kg in a large bucket "Monday night" and found it much better and also seemed to do a better job than the pillow cases.
the only thing was it took about 2hrs to run clear, with the hose on full bore. moving it around with the pressure fitting every 5-10 mins.
"and we are on water restrictions" "um ah"
i put the sand in the tank then slowly added the water poring it in onto a dinner plate and i could of put my axies in straight after it was that clear

but waited for about 8hrs just to be on the safe side

this time i used pool filter sand "but it was filthy"

i found that with the pool filter sand, it doesnt take long to wash anyway. Not when compared to washed river sand anyway. I was washing washed river sand for 4 hrs and the water still ran brown. The pool filter sand took 30 mins. I assumed it was because its not natural sand (if you know wat i mean), its made out of silicon.

the pool filter sand i just got had heaps of silt in it, b4 i moved it to the lawn to wash it i started washing it on the pavers i have and it left silt everywhere, but then moved it onto the lawn to give it a good soaking while i was doing it...

Well,I did the whole change to sand thing yesterday,it took 3 hours!!I left it to settle and ran the filter for the evening, and put the axies in late lastnight. Will take more pics and post in gallery soon
