Florida Animal Activists: Tortoises Should be Relocated, Not Killed

Florida's gopher tortoises have once again lost out to developers as another Wal-Mart store, this one in Palm Beach County, is constructed. Wal-Mart has been granted permits by the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife to entomb tortoises in their burrows rather than relocate them to suitable habitat. Because of their slow metabolism, it will take months for the entombed tortoises to die.

Gopher tortoises are designated a "species of special concern" in Florida and have declined by an estimated 80% throughout their range, largely due to habitat destruction. These slow-to-reproduce animals are acknowledged to be a "keystone" species-one that fundamentally supports a healthy ecosystem.

Florida offers developers two options to comply with the current regulations regarding impacts on gopher tortoises. They may obtain a permit to relocate tortoises, or take the cheaper route-as Wal-Mart has done-by obtaining a permit for "incidental take" (i.e. accidental killing) of gopher tortoises as a result of development. Developers can then bury tortoises alive, but must pay into a fund intended to purchase habitat for these animals elsewhere. The trouble is, the few acres set aside so far for tortoises aren't likely to be sufficient to offset the continued loss of thousands of tortoises per year. The species' slow reproductive cycle means that recovery from such significant population declines will be prolonged, if not impossible.

What You Can Do
Please contact Wal-Mart and ask the company to take responsibility for finding and relocating all the tortoises on site before they develop anywhere in gopher tortoise habitat, rather than dooming the tortoises to a slow death. Ask them to help the survival of gopher tortoises in Florida by, at a minimum, saving tortoises before they build, and preferably building only in areas where tortoises and other rare species do not occur.

Also contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to ask them to stop the practice of issuing permits to emtomb tortoises. Ask that they instead require that tortoises be found and relocated to suitable and protected habitat.

Thank you for taking action on behalf of tortoises today!

I often hate the human race.

Hey, can't really blame Walmart on this one. Had Florida Fish and Wildlife not said "go ahead", it wouldn't be an issue. Although I imagine someone's getting a big christmas bonus of sorts for giving out the permits.

I bet they are, those rats!

Group Formed By Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) To Collect Meaningful Input From Stakeholders Involved in Gopher Tortoises in Florida.

From Ray Ashton, Ashton Biodiversity Research & Preservation Institute, Inc.

Dear Members, Friends, Past Students, consultants, and The Tortoise Caring:

Great things are happening with Tortoise Conservation in Florida. There have been many meetings and the FWC has a great team made up of staff working to change the whole approach to tortoise conservation in the state. To gain meaningful input from stakeholders around the state, FWC has formed a group of 18 representatives that will receive questions from the FWC regarding what they are considering as far as regulations and changes are concerned. Those representatives then contact people for feedback and ideas. These are compiled, presented and discussed at the Stakeholders Forum. More details on this will be posted on our web page (address below).

We want your feedback and want it from everyone who wishes to respond. We got this far in this effort because folks like you have made it known you care and don't like what is going on with tortoise conservation.

Here is how we are going to do this:

First, we will email you with the questions and issues at hand for comment. We will give you a deadline to get feedback into us via email so we can compile and comment.

Second, we are developing a method to provide the same on our web page and allow you to vote and comment from there.

Third, on the web page, we will post the results and updates on all things tortoise on a weekly basis or as things change.

Please help us by being brief and clear. No stories please. IF you have an idea, let us know. If we get a batch of questions, we will try to answer them on the web page for all to see.

My new assistant and GTCI Coordinator, Natalie Weaver will be keeping this all organized and running.

Please pass this on to your friends and organizations. Spread the word. I think we have nearly 1000 on our email list now and I would like to double that after Christmas.

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and all other meaningful occasions and a great New Year. Remember a Gopher Tortoise Book makes a great gift. You can order right from the web page.

Sincerely,

  • Katia Del Rio-Tsonis:
Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
