There is an open vote for the new mascot for Virginia Highlands Community College.
The voting is open for two more days, imagine how cool it would be to have a team called the hellbenders! Think of the t-shirts!!

I voted, and the hellbenders are winning by 400 votes currently!!! :D. Ya the hellbenders would be a sick name for a team

Voted as well. They are 11% ahead of the wolves, so it seems to be fairly safe to say that they are winning. Hope they make a nice shirt of it :)

I'll only vote if someone gets to wear a huge, wrinkly, hellbender costume and dances during football games.... either that or a sweatshirt...

Oh no! It's close! 48% to 47% (3334 to 3280).
Get your vote in! Support the recognition of one of the most incredible animals in the eastern US!

You have my vote. I wonder why so many voted for the Wolves, is it just me or does that sound like a very cliche college mascot name?

VA Highlands CC is in Abingdon, which is smack in the buckle of the Bible Belt. It's very possible that the name itself is offensive to some there. But what a chance to educate the local public on a creature that they should be really proud of!

Would be a great oppertunity to raise awareness about the animals problems in the wild.

I voted too, but wolves are leading now ;/

I keep imagining the Simpsons episode where Homer is the safety-salamander and he wears a big orange salamander costume...

Latest word is that you can vote as many times as you want. Keep clicking if you can.

Man the mascot would be a riot! And so would all the campus gear.

Looks like votings over, can't get the page up any more. Hope my clicks helped the hellbender become the mascot.

I think they realised that you can vote more than once and/or that a bunch of people note related to the school were voting.

I think it closed at midnight Eastern time. I casted my vote at around 11:30 pm on the 26th but when I went to check the results at around 12:15 am on the 27th the page error came up. Either way they'll anounce the results at 5:30 pm.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
