I'm just curious what species vocalize? I have heard sounds from them several times-- the most recent when I was just a foot away from them. I'd like to know which species do make sounds.

Hi Justin

I have heard my Pleuros vocalise when I have transfered them between set ups. I have not heard any of my others newts vocalise at all.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff, I was right next to a few tanks of C. cyanurus, and next to them are Neurergus, then the only other adults are Triturus. I think it was the C. cyanurus that made it though, but I'm not sure. They are also the only established adults, the others are younger adults.
Justin

My C. cyanurus have made a slight squeak noise when startled quite a few times. I've noticed sometimes when they do it that they release a little bubble of air, possibly how they do it? They used to do it a lot more when they were younger.

Some Mertensiella species/subpsecies are known to omit sounds

My Triturus squeak on occasion, especially when startled or being chased (by me). And just once I heard a Jefferson's salamander squeak when chasing a cricket.

Thanks for the info. The first dozen times I heard it, I just dismissed it as I didn't think of Caudates as being very vocal. I literally hear it at least twice a week, so I was starting to give it more validity. It does happen though when I'm around, but not visible, and not doing anything to the tank. Do they vocalize to each other? I doubt that it's from aggression either, so what does that leave as the cause?
Justin

They vocalize when suprised. My pleuros do it when I tranfer them around, but only when they feel a little suprised and become squirmy.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
