I have made hamster bin cages for years and this brought to mind an idea ... could I cut out a window in a bin and silicone in a piece of Plexiglas or acrylic? This way I don't have to stick to traditional tank sizes ( at least until I can get my big tank up) and its more budget friendly ( even if not great looking)

Bin walls tend to be too flexible to make that work. You could try it, but I'm almost sure the wall will flex and you'll get cracks/leaks once it's full of water.

Wouldn't the thickness of the bin walls and how full you are filling it matter? I was just brainngstormi

It might, but I've found that the walls start to deform with just a little bit of water.

Ah, it seems like it wouldn't be a very good idea then. I just thought I may be able to go bigger with a bin.

Bins are great. I've used bins for aquatics quite a few times. Some people use nothing but bins. And if you keep them on the floor, you can see down into them, and you won't need a 'window'.

I like watching them from the side but it is good to know people have used bins successfully :)

This is what we brits are currently visualising reading this thread:-
