A short film of my adult cynops orientalis devouring pewny earthworms, notice the 2 younger terrestrial ones, the resident shrimps and the white cloud minnows all getting down...

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=na9F3q-5FPg

Tell me what you think... cheers

Very cute newt! I was wondering how large your tank was? I've been looking to add 2 shrimp to my tank (i posted a thread about it) but i'm still debating...I know they'll mainly serve to help clean the tank but I don't know if im already at capacity (2 small FBS in a 10 gallon (with quite a high water level..might post pictures later). I want to add cherry shrimp, which are quite small, .5-1 inch.
Also- quick question, do your shrimp mind the sand bottom? i read somewhere they don't like it.. I've been renovating my tank and was hoping to change substrates shortly (currently i have gravel which is far too small), either to larger gravel or sand.

Nice video. It also showed just how interested the newts are in the minnows.

That was filmed in my 15 gallon tank. The shrimps dont come out much, mainly at night, or when there is food sometimes. I had 3 shrimps all different species, sadly one just died yesterday actually, its strange when they die, they go opaque and pinky like when u buy them to eat,,, hmmm...
I dont think they do much to keep it clean but they do their bit, hehe.
They might not like the sand, they stay in the logs mainly eating algea, bloodworms for a treat and segments of earthworms even get tackled by the brave ones. They literally eat them alive, ripping out little bits of the worm flesh..
Any newt world can be made more interesting by shrimps, I plan on getting quite a few for my new 30 gallon tank...

Very cool. Do your newts ever try to eat the smaller male white clouds? All my white clouds were eaten by my mudpuppy.

cheers, no never, the minnows eat their own babies tho..

This could be a sad testament to my obsession with newts, but I found this video entertaining.

Yeah Awesome video. I like how it was a music video, I wonder what KRS1 would think of it. Your newt is a really cool guy, totally king of the tank. I loved watching the minnows mess with the worm a bit and then he'd come by and show them who was boss.

By the way, How deep is your water level? And what aquatic plants do you have in there? was that vallisneria?

That video was really cool. C. orientalis is a very entertaining newt to have. They are always active and ready feeders once they've established themselves in a tank.

Thank-you for sharing your video. I thought that it was great. :supercool:

ditto - really enjoyed that - thanks! i couldn't believe how they chomped up the worm whole
i cut mine up (well my boys do, i couldn't) but think i'm gonna try just putting a small one in. one of my newts is too skinny, but has a great appetite. although two small bits of worm appears to be all he can take in one sitting.

i can't even get pics of mine, let alone a video :dizzy:

yea some of the worms are long, she doesn't take them if they are too big or thick, she might take a test bite then realise it is too big

Cool video, i liked how the minnows were playing around with the worm in the beginning and bam the c.o comes in a ruins there fun .

Hey that was a great vid! Awful music though :D

At first I couldnt tell that was a worm to eat, looked like a finger. Do you have any pics of your whole set up? Im curious how the whole thing looks.

haha, so what music would you have picked ravenous? I'm open to death metal but it scares the newts,, at least I dont look like a demented wizard or something, haha, why is there a cross on your head? jokes,,all in good faith, but anyway jokes aside, heres a picture of the setup the vid was shot in:

Both the video and your tank setup are absolutely fabulous! Would you mind answering a few questions for me? First, is the rock formation you have in the tank a specific piece that you bought/made or is it a pile of rocks? Second, what kind of shrimp and fish do you have in the tank? I generally thought that you could not mix newts with other animals. Is there any other maintenance that results from having fish and shrimp in the tank? Thanks! Your setup is truly an inspiration!

video

I don't keep newts Sam, but nice video, enjoyed the music too.

I love that second when newts pause with their nose on the worm and you know they are going to strike, but you have to wait until they do (sad enough for you Jen?) :)

Keep them cool over the winter (with shoirted days if possible) and you should have eggs in the spring.

Had a question that I just want to be sure of. My marbled newt is a little over a year old and has started to develop and I noticed that he is starting to swell a little below his abdomen. I guess I’d like to know if they are his testes or if I need to be concerned.

Hello!!! I'm new to this website and idk how to ask a proper question on the designated spot yet, so I'll ask here, I'm a first time Axolotl owner, and my dad used to run an aquarium store, anyways... Orca, my Axolotl, seems to loose parts of her toes on one limb from time to time, I can't seem to find the problem. Tempature is well, she doesn't seem to have any infections or anything, though. And I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a vet in Brazil for amphibians that are in a reasonable distance to drive without stressing Orca out too much

Hello, I’m hoping for some advice please. Our Axolotl is about 7 months old. Till now no problem. Eating, growing and happy. He’s simply stopped eating. Everything looks fine, his gills look healthy and no apparent signs of sickness. He just swims past the pellets and bloodworm like he can’t smell it. I don’t think it’s a blockage either. Any ideas and suggestions for treatment would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
