hi
I've got an Aqua one 101f filter in my 54l tank with one axolotl. Currently I'm using it with duckbill outlet slightly above the water so it can create a bit of a stir and oxygenate the water...I'm just wondering if venturi might be a better option? Or I should get an air stone and continue to use duckbill...I'm also worried about the water flow...so far Klaus seems to be doing ok (had him for 3 weeks now) with the duckbill. Will venturi stir the water more? What air stone and pump is the best option (available in uk) and is it expensive?I don't want Klaus to develop very large gills that will look like lion's mane :p already they r big and fluffy

Some people may not understand the terms you are using. The Aqua One 101 is a submersible filter. I think it's obvious what the duckbill outlet is. The venturi adapter on this type of filter is a little tube that allows air to be sucked into the filter to produce a lot of fine bubbles.

Importantly, what kind of lid do you have on the tank? Using a screen lid or some kind of mesh (instead of solid plastic or glass) will improve aeration and also keep the water temperature cooler.

I wouldn't use the venturi because it could introduce too much air, particularly very fine bubbles. This could pose a risk of gas bubble disease, particularly at times when the temperature of the water is increasing. An airstone is safer because it produces larger bubbles.

If possible, direct the outflow from the duckbill toward the side of the tank close to the filter to minimize current.

Thanks for the useful info! :) especially for the tip about putting duckbill to the side. At the moment the filter is on the side of the tank and the duckbill flows to the front of the tank but I'll move the filter to the back now so the duckbill will spray on the side of the tank :) my question is: does that not affect how the filter works and will the oxygenation will be the same? Definitely want to get air stone as I read it not only provides more oxygen but axolotls love playing with bubbles :). Any suggestions on particular brand or type of airstones and pumps? Nothing too fancy and expensive but reasonably low voltage and safe for the axie :) also my tank came with a plastic lid but I'm keeping it open and I tend to slide it to the back so there is more air circulation but still some cover...think I'm gonna have to get one of the mesh ones tho as I'm struggling with the temp every now and again :p
