Hi, is this ok to put in my Axolotl tank?

almond/catappa leaf extract is fine with axolotls and is used for dark water environments, almond leaves are used for the beneficial tannins that they produce which have an antibacterial effect.
the extract will darken the water which although pleasant for the axolotl (it diffuses the light) it can be visually unpleasant for the owner, activated carbon will help remove the yellow/brown tint.

I just bought 9 inch Indian almond leaves from Amazon to make the extract myself. But do you know how long it’s good for once it’s been made? Like how often should I throw out the extract and make new extract

crumble a leaf into a mug, add boiling water, leave to cool down, sieve the leaf out and add water to tank after water change, one per week.
almond extract in a bottle tend to be more concentrated than home made, unlike homemade the bottled extract lasts longer due to preservatives where as batch home made tends to develop mold after a month.

How much homemade extract should I use for a 20 gallon? I used one 9 inch leaf in 14 ounce jar.

one leaf used per week should be fine, if you are wanting to darken the water then at least five will be required.

I’m only using extract since the leaves do match the aesthetic of the tank

I tend to make fresh extract weekly, I grind 50 - 100 almond leaves in a blender, then once ground down to powder place in a zip lock bag, I use 1 tbsp in a mug of boiling water, then drain extract and add to tank during a water change (when the tank is being refilled)

Hello, any updates with your axolotl? Could you share the link of Amazon?

Can you just place the almond leaf in the water? Or does it need to be in the form of an extract?

almond leaves can be used in the tank but after a month the breakdown adds to the bio-load and becomes less beneficial, scuds/shrimp/snails and some fish enjoy eating them.
