Hi all, about two days ago we fed our axolotls brineshripm, yesturday we did a water change and today when i turned the light on to make sure everything is ok i noticed tiny white round/tadpole things swimming or twitching just below the water surface, are these parasites or could they be baby brineshrimp? Im so confused, ive never seen anything like them before and am slightly worried they could be something bad, my husband has gone out to ask the pet shop we bought the shrimp from but i wondered if anyone on here could also help, thank you in advance :)

Re: Urgent advic needed

Or could it be water fleas and if so how did we ge them all of a sudden?

Re: Urgent advic needed

My husband just put shrimp in and they are going crazy eating the bug things but are getting stuck to the glass above the water level

Re: Urgent advic needed

Did you find out what these were?! I have had little worms in my tank for the last week, I think they are planaria, but I just noticed an odd tiny white tadpole thing skating around the tank. Yuck yuck!

I had the same problem, and from the info you gave me, I think they are Cyclopses.
I dont know how they got there, but if they are round with a little tail, your Axies can eat them, like mine did.
But ask the petstore, or post a pic!

I will try and post a picture of them, there arent as many since the shrimp ate most of them! The petshop said as we have a large tank we will get some "bugs" occasionally and that they are nothing to worry about. From what I can see they have an oval body, two antenas and a tail. Will they disappear over time or should i just not worry about them? Thank you for the replies.

I'm not sure what they are, but can't you just transport your axolotls and clean out the tank?

E: The BBS I have always fed look like little commas. They just twitch around and are orange (yellow-tan when dead).

If they are so small that brine shrimps can eat them, you don't need to worry (about the white things eating the axolotls), and I don't think they dissapear over time, because I still have them, but my Axolotls don't seem to worry about it. My little brother is now looking for some fish too, and he wants to keep them in my tank. Any toughts about that?
My Axolotls are 4,5cm and 5cm.
I don't know how much that is in inches.

I know that 5cm is about 2 inches. There are 2.54 cm in an inch. ;)

We've only just cleaned the tank :/ I think they are copepods, anyone know about these? I dont think they do any harm, they just scoot around just below the water surface and my axolotls are all happy and healthy :) I will keep my eye on them or try and do some more research, see if theres a way of getting rid of them.

I wouldn't put any fish with axoltols, for one the fish will nip at your axes gills and two the axolotls could eat them if they are small enough.

Having little critters show up in your tank is a good thing not a bad thing. It means you've created a healthy little ecosystem. Copepods are absolutely harmless. I love seeing copepods, limpets, scuds, hydra, snails, daphnia, worms, ect in my tanks. It means I'm keeping a balanced tank. Plus they're fun to watch.

Jess, Your comment is interesting. How do the \little guys get in the tank though? I would freak out and become concerned if they were in my tank too.

I read you can get them from live plants and wood...I may be wrong but I'm guessing that how we got them.

They can hitchhike in on things you bring into the tank such as plants. I don't know how some of them get there, they just pop up. I can assure you though that it is nothing at all to worry about, and I wouldn't try to remove them if I were you.
