Just an update on the larvae I have that are a bit slow to develop. They seem to have had a bit of a growth spurt this past week. The are now aprox 9 weeks old and just over 5cm in length. They now have fully developed front and back legs complete with toes. Im still unsure with their colourings but am happy that they seem to be doing better now and have survived this long.

Very nice! I can tell that they are some sort of albino from the red centre to their eyes. What are the parents again?

Regards Neil

Thanks Neil. Their parents were a golden albino and a black melanoid. These guys are a bit odd looking. Its hard to tell from the photos but one actually looks like a very light grey wild type, as in it has splotchy grey markings all over.

At this age, how big should they be?

I'm not quite sure how big they should be at 9 weeks but 5cm seems a little on the small side. I'm going to stick my neck out and say that your youngsters will probably turn out like the ones below. These were also slightly slower to develop than their siblings and went through a stage of looking very pale until finally their true colours came out.

Regards Neil

The first photo you posted looks exactly like these guys when I first got them. If they turn out like the other photos you posted Ill be thrilled. What beautiful looking axies.
These guys came from another forum memeber. Unfortunantly the others I took didnt make it. These two have been very slow to develop. I later learnt that others who took larvae from this clutch have had similar problems. Im relieved they are finally developing and growing somewhat., but still obviously concerned that they arent growing to "schedual". They seem healthy enough and are eating white worms twice a day.

Hi decambla,

you said they were 5cm and 9weeks I dont think you should be too worried, my axies hatched over 7 days and are at about 10weeks old now and if you look at the pic the little ones in the center tub are still only 20mm while the axies in the tub to the right of them hatched on the same day and are 52-58mm, and the large one in top right tub is 9cm. They will grow at different rates due to their food intake or even genetics(if thats the word) and probably other factors, I got one off someone once that was 12cm at over a year old.
oh, and I think your axie could turn out a little stunner:D. Goodluck with him or her keep us posted as he grows, I'd love to see how the colour develops.:D

It's reassuring to know they all grow at different rates. The pics I attached to my post are actually two different axies. The one on the left is slightly lighter in colour and doesnt seem to have as many grey markings as the other. Close up their markings are really beautiful, hopefully it continues to develop as they get bigger. I'm more than happy to post more pics as they grow and update you on their colour development. :)

sorry I did try to attach a pic but it didn't work, I'll try again but if it doesn't work you get the idea anyway.

Update: Well these guys are now around 4 months old now. Theyre still plodding along slowly. About 9.5cms long. They still seem to be keeping their unusal markings.

just wondering do you need to put air in with them. or can u just keep them in containers like that with out an airstone. im currently bout 3 days into my eggs developing so still have just over a week and a half to go hopefully before they hatch and if i can just put them in containers like that it will make it easier
