With good intentions, my father went out and bought me a small amount of aquarium sand for my soon to be axolotl tank. The problem is that I can't seem to find out what is in it:

Aqua Terra Sand 5lb - Black (6pc) - AWW80035

It says that it is meant for freshwater aquariums, that it doesn't alter the water chemistry, and that it is natural sand with a 100% acrylic coating. I am reluctant to use this in my tank without knowing its contents and would like to know if anyone uses or has had any experience with this brand. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hello, I dont have any experience using this sand but had a quick look on google, it says its for freshwater use, 100%non toxic and wont effect water chemistry so It sounds ideal to be honest! I couldnt find the composition of it but if its 100% non toxic and doesnt effect water chemistry there shouldnt be anything in it that could do any harm.
Just give it a good wash to get rid of all the dust or you could have a hazy tank for a few weeks!

Thanks for the response! I figured it was good to use, and the description makes it seem harmless enough. If there's nothing harmful in it and the color isn't going to bleed out, I guess I should start rinsing. :D

Hello again, regarding the color bleeding out I initially thought the same but I think that is why it is acrylic coated (they do the same with gravel) the acrylic coating should seal the grains and hold in the color. I cant really see why it would be acrylic coated for any other reason.

No need to worry. As stated previously, it is an acrylic coated product. Polymer technology has come a long way, so you needn't worry about the color leaching out.n The pigment is totally plasticized.
