So, today we got a surprise of a tank full of axolotl eggs! 180+ just counting from the front of the tank, so I am estimating 250+ total. Most look good, fertile, from what I have seen in pics, but this is a first for us and we are very excited! They are attached to large lava rocks in the tank, should we remove the adults, or try to remove the eggs? The female is wild type, and the male is a yellow albino, and all the eggs so far look like variations of 1/2 brown and 1/2 white, so I am assuming they will develop into wild type babies? We ordered some Daphnia, is that good to use? We read over some threads on here, as well as the axolotl site, is there any other information we should have?

I also thought I would share some shoddy close ups I tried to take of the eggs. First time using my tripod for pics :p

Ill post updated pictures of the egg development as days go by if anyone is interested. Thanks for any info and looking!

wow thats amazing! :) i cant wait to see more close ups, espcially when mine are about one week old, its amazing to see what they really are looking like!

I normally remove my eggs and put them on a heat matt to keep them at a constant 19c, and yes i use Daph :) some of my bigger hatchlings are eating small blood worm as well now. The colour of the eggs dont actually mean anything i got told, most of mine were brown with a little white but i got wild types and lecustics.

Great photos. I think people remove the eggs on whatever they were attached too mostly.

Can I ask how much of a blow-up is, for example, that last egg picture? It's so cool. That's not the first photo I've seen like that on the forum and I'm so impressed with them. Besides on the forum, I've never seen photos like them. If I looked at an (other sal species) egg under a magnifying glass, would I see that much detail? Or only with axolotl eggs, because they are pretty large, aren't they?

They are pretty large yes, um, I dont know how much of a blow up it is, because i dont know a ton about cameras. Its a 100mm macro lens, which is a telephoto, and my camera is 8 mega pixels, and the crop on that picture is a little less then 100%.

Under a magnifying glass would probably give you MORE detail, since you dont have to worry about distortion of the water, the camera shaking [even with a tripod] or the eggs wiggling with the water current, etc. Me looking at the images critically, and they insanely fuzzy, but thanks for the complements just the same :)

I removed the eggs from the rocks, so I think any other pics I take arent going to look nearly as good, since there is like... stuff on them now :(

Here is the full size version [at least, I think its the same picture, i have about 100 that look almost identical hahaa]:

Next time something in my tank lays eggs, I'm going to look at it under a hand lens and under a microscope...I never did that before. They remind me of little snakes because the cells look like scales. Boy, it's just one adventure after another in this hobby.

for a few days they looked like nothing but little solid balls, but today they started to change a bit, here is a quick updated pic.

wow :) mine are a week and two days old, so they have there little heads and starting to see faint gills. Think im going to go get a magnifying glass n have look.

great pictures!!!

Hi! They are really great pictures that show such great detail of the eggs.
I've been looking to get a new better camera wondering if you could tell me what kind of camera you have? I see you have 100mm lens and it's 8 mega pixel but wondering what kind you have. It takes awesome pictures!!!

Thanks :) Its a digital rebel XT.

This picture isnt as great, I was kindof in a hurry. This is from 3pm today, and since these pics were taken, they have sprouted little nubbins that I assume will be gills, and they have started moving!!!

My boyfriend is doing his gecko-work right now, so more pics of the next stage will have to wait till hes done feeding/cleaning all of them ;)
