Question: Uncycled tank

I have a friend who owns an axolotl but she keeps hers in an uncycled tank???? She has had him for around 5 months and he is perfectly fine, she has an internal canister filter, siphons out waste immediately and watches ammonia like crazy. BUT is this ok??

After a while the tank will be cycled. I never pre-cycle a tank myself, I just put in my aged water and add animals. I do water changes every three weeks. I've never had a problem. I am not the only one. If I'm raising eggs, I"ll use some water from the parent tank in starting the egg tank and add some crumpled leaves and such but that's as much as I do.
