Hi folks and experts,

i need some real practical advice on for keeping Tylototriton verrucosus.

1) can i keeping a single Tylototriton verrucosus in a 1.5ftx1ftx1ft tank?
2) can i keep it between 22-25 degrees?

thanks

A five gallon tank seems a bit small. I just looked at my five gallon and I'm assuming that's what those measurements come out to be. I would suggest at least a ten gallon for a newt of there size. I don't keep this species so I can't comment on the temp. Look around a bit more on this site. You can find some photos of some very nice Verrucosus set-ups.

hi jesse

thanks for advice
1.5ftx1ftx1ft its a 10gallon 40L tank
i think 22-25 should be fine referencing the caresheets?

thanks

22C is fine to keep them at all year with a rise to 25C for breeding ,I only keep them at 25C for a few days at anytime. The downside to keeping them so warm all the time is it shortens their lifespan as they grow large and fast. And the fertility booms then crashes. This has been my experience with them.
Personally 14-22 is warm enough. For breeding a couple of days a week for a month at 25-26C .I assume that where you stay you will find it hard keeping the temperature low?.
Good luck with them they are great newts

hi cyclone and jesse,

thanks for advice.
ya its very hot here.
i just bought a dolphin mini-chiller rated for a 2ft 60Liters tank 225watts.
i am going to test if the chiller can cool down a smaller 40Liters tank to 22degrees.

by the way, is the T.Kweichowensis and T.shanjing aquatic like T.verrucosus?
whats the suitable temp for T.Kweichowensis and T.shanjing?

some times they are avaliable.

thanks

Similar temperatures although they are mainly terrestrial. I would advise you have a go at the verrucosus first , The other two species are quite demanding in comparison

hi mr cylone

thanks for advice
ok i will go for T.verrucosus as i prefer more aquatic types of newts.
how many T.verrucosus can i keep in a 10gallon tank?

thanks

hi mr cylone,

another thing i am worried.
Are T.verrucosus aggressive to each other?

i have kept Pachytriton and Paramesotriton before, these were very aggressive even in a 2FT tank.
i can always see the dominant male chasing and biting others. until some have to go and hide on the top of driftwood dry land area. i think this is not good for them.

thanks

I think 10 gallons is a bit small as they need gentle filtration to keep the tank healthy although it's possible to keep maybe 3 at the most providing it's kept clean. My water depth varies from 6-10 inches

hi mr cyclone

wow eggs!!!

i think i will just keep a pair in a 10gallon tank with a small internal filter 200L/hr
right now i have 3 spare 10gallon tanks on a 3 tier rack with a chiller for cooling.

thanks for advice
