Hi
this is where I keep my verrucosus
50517.jpg

I've introduced in it a week ago a kind of "shrimp" that eats algae. The newts are interested in them but too daft and slow to catch them.

This is where they like to rest:

Cheers!

Will these shrimps not have negative effects on any eggs laid? What species are the shrimps anyway?
Cheers,
Adam

Actually I had thought about this but the newts are still too young to breed so no problem for now. I think the shrimps might also eat the tiny larvae when just out of the egg. Maybe the best thing would be to remove eggs as soon as they are laid.
Cheers
Francesco

Shrimps will eat anything they can eat..I had some in my tropical aquarium, and every week some of my neon tetra's were missing,

After some evening investigation I found out that they start eating from the tail and other fins from living Tetra's while they are resting in the plants... So be careful with future larvae's

Those shrimps look very much like Caridina japonica or Amano shrimp. They are sold in aquarium shops as pets. They do eat algae and leftovers of food but not as effective as other dwarf freshwater shrimps such as the Cherry shrimp Neo/Caridina denticulata sinesis var. red . I keep a colony of those shrimps and they are just as amusing on their own in a dedicated species tank. They have somewhat high needs as far as water quality is concerned though. It will be a pity if your shrimps are designated as food for your newts.

Chris, I never had problems with shrimp attacking my larvae or eggs. I think your shrimp are a different species Palaeomonetes. These shrimps will eat dead fish.

Oh poor yamato numa ebi

.. they were such hardworking algae cleaners! (sniff)!
Hahahaha!

Seriously, those shrimp do wonders in cleaning up algae! But I suppose they also make good food for your tylos.

They do indeed. It's a pity they died. But it could also be due to the fact that there isn't a filter in the aquarium. So the shrimps might have died and the tylos ate them straight after

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
