Probably a question that's been answered before but how do you tell the difference between these Triturus dobrogicus and T. cristatus? These look an awful lot like my cristatus.
Duncan

The differences between are morphological and about the size . In general , is a streamlined species , more thin than Triturus cristatus . The distance between front legs and back legs is quite more than cristatus , the digits are longer and the head smaller and rounded . Then the ventral pattern usually have black dots limited to the periphery of the belly , giving a banded appearance . There are also a lot of small with dots in the dorsal coloration , usually cream or grey and never black . Anyway , dobrogicus is , in general , a smaller and more delicate newt than cristatus and , of course , karelinii or carnifex , but the real differences are genetical .

To add to what Ruben said, the throats of dobrogicus are usually much darker than the other species, and the body is often reddish-brown.

The slimness is the most obvious character- they appear much more slender and long-bodied than other cresteds.

The paper that Ruben mentioned last week (at
http://dpc.uba.uva.nl/ctz/vol68/nr03/a04 ) includes photos of belly colouration of all 4 crested species.
