I'm really new to keeping these guys. I got two from a forum member, and they've been doing great except the female has weird eyes... I think.

She's got some gray covering the top part of each eye. It actually looks like the discoloration is under the outer lens - looks a bit like a tiny bubble in each eye. I think it's gotten worse since her last shed but still only covers the top part of each eye. I've attached some pictures below:

Otherwise she seems perfectly fine. She can obviously see because she begs for food every time I appear near the tank. She's eating well and has no problem seeing wiggling worms. She's also laying eggs (infertile) all over the tank. Water temp is ~ 68F and she's kept with one male who has normal eyes.

Anyone have any suggestions or seen anything like this before? Like I said, I don't really have much experience with Triturus yet.

Though I can't say for sure that it's the same thing, I've seen something like this before. Turned out to be mold/fungus. It disappeared after the animals spent a couple of days on paper towels. Hope someone who has experienced this with their own animals can say that your animals have the same thing.

Thanks for the reply! I was thinking about taking her out and putting her in a terrestrial set up. She does have a spot where she comes out of the water and both she and the male spend a decent amount of time up there.

Me too :(

A small complication is that I can't actually see the gray stuff when she's not in the water. How long should I leave her out? She pigged out yesterday on 1/2 a cube of frozen bloodworm and numerous earthworms, so even though she won't eat out of the water, I'm not worried about her starving to death anytime soon.

I really don't know, but I had a T.dobrogicus with a little bit of mold on the tip of the tail, which was bitten off. Kept it on land in dry conditions (for a newt) for 5 days and afterwards it was completely gone. She ate on land btw, but not the first 2 days, so maybe yours will start eating out of the water as well.

Thanks, again!

She's pretty unhappy. I'll keep her out for a few days and see how the spots look. I'm guessing the next step would be salt baths if this doesn't work?
