Hi Ruben, great pics! I visited the Picos de Europa once, not too far from Burgos, truly a magnificent area!

Do you know which subspecies of salamandra you've got on those pics? It looks like a S. s. fastuosa - S. s. bejarae transition form to me.

Yes, exactly Wouter, is a fastuosa/bejarae transition form.

Rubén,
Thank you very much for that view of L. helveticus. Though I have observed L vulgaris in the wild, I've yet to come across L. helveticus and most certainly have not seen them during the breeding season!

You are truly lucky to live in in place rich with caudate variety, hombré! Keep the pictures coming! Once again thanks for the view!

do the local children ever collect them to keep as pets, or are they generally left alone?

Hi Will

not really. Those villages have only old people, and population density is low. Then, young people leaves the mountains and goes to the cities to find work so... caudates are ( still ) protected

An Arab manuscript of the century XII mentions the presence of "strange beasts" on that pond ( very close to a christian church )

You're so lucky to be able to find such beautiful animals, the only newt or salamander I've been able to see are Plethodon cinereus and Notophthalmus viridescens

Ruben,

You have made me

A passion like this have no sense if you don't share it, and this is the best site to share...

Hi Rubén,

nice pictures, especially the salamandra's. It would be interesting to check the salamandra's on a genetical level. Can you give the location to David Donaire so he can toe-clip one of the animals for DNA analysis. He is collecting DNA throughout the area right now. Especially these transition area's are highly interesting.
