I need to transfer my axolotl to a new fishtank but would like to know what is the best way to do this?

Thank you in advance :)

Hi,

First you have to cycle your tank i thought it took about a month but i have been told this can actually take two.

Once you have cycled your tank you can then put your axie in.

To move your axolotl without much stress is to get a tub large enough for the axie to sit in,put it in the tank slowly and gently coax the axie into the tub.

This will be the least stressful way to transport your axie from one tank to another.

Handling is very stressful & a net can get tangled up in their gills.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your help but is there any other way because the reason why im putting him in another tank is because the one he is in now is slightly leaking, would i just be able to transfer the water thats in the tank now into the new one?

Hi,

You can get a bowl or something big enough for the axie to still be able to move and fill it with your tank water then get a siphoning hose and siphon your water to the other tank then simply plop the axie back in.

You might have to coax the axie in and out but my axolotls LOVE to sit on my hand.

Whenever i move plants ect they come and all huddle onto my hand lol and if i cup it they get in so i just put my hand in they all climbed on then lifted them out then put my hand straight in the other tank ( identical water parameters i had siphoned 3/4 of my water to it) and they all got off :p

If your axolotl doesnt like being handled i would put some food in a tub or something so he crawls in.

If there's no time to cycle the new tank properly then make sure you're keeping a strict eye on water parameters - mainly Ammonia and Nitrite.

Doing regular water changes (2 - 3 times a week approx 20%) while the new tank cycles, to avoid any build up of toxic substances.

You can use the water from the old tank, but bear in mind that hardly any / no beneficial bacteria lives in the actual water, it is actually on the tank glass / filter media / any solid ornaments or plants, so it's also a good idea to put them in the new tank
