Tough paddletail

I have this male paddle tail newt. I housed it with a female of its own species before, but they fought too much so i separated them. There was some bite marks with sand sticking on to it. I think I see a bit of fuzz on his tail. What should I do? Should I try the dirt quarantine?

Also, he swallowed a piece of gravel yesterday. Its those kind that comes in goldfish kits, the fake kind.

And he's still going, except he acts strange. He stays in the same position for a whole day.

He eats ok still
