Question: Too early for a tankmate?

My little axolotl is going on 5 inches and we all want to know when he will "outgrow his cannibalistic stage". The thing is, there is so much conflicting information online, and I was hoping someone could demystify the whole thing. If I got another axolotl, probably a different breed, that was the same size- should we experience any problems with cannibalism?

the cannibalism thing gets over-hyped in my opinion. they only eat each other because they have the instinct to snap at any moving object when young, 5 inches is generally when they outgrow this but some individuals like tankmates more and others prefer being alone.
if you get another one try and get one the same size as yours, if the heads are about the same size and they are well fed there shouldn't be too many issues
