Hi, I'm a newbie at raising axolotls and was wondering if small red maggots would be too big to give to hatchlings (or a bad choice)? Thanks!

Hatchlings need really tiny food. Most people hatch brine shrimp.

Also, maggots need to be decapitated to remove their strong jaws and pierced before being fed to adult axolotls, as they can be hard to digest.

Wow really??? Didn't know that! I've been feeding mine maggots for ages. Will it be the same for mealworms?

I recommend feeding your hatchlings daphnia. Start with the smaller ones first. They'll stay alive in the water with your hatchlings until they're eaten. If you have a large amount of hatchlings have a go at hatching baby brine shrimp which would be a lot cheaper. I've failed in both of my attempts but most other people on this forum have had no problems. Look at the brine shrimp hatching tutorial.

Same for mealworms. They're even worse, and I would recommend feeding only freshly moulted ones.

Daphnia are great too! I prefer pulex over the other species.
