Quick question, i have a axolotl that is about 10 years old now. He is leucistic and had breed successfully for a number of years. i took him in about 4 years ago from someone who was moving and unfortunately couldn't take him with. Hes breed twice for me, year one and year two, but hasn't since them. His colas are no longer swollen, if i didn't know any better i would say he was a female. Has his colas receded because he is to old to breed or is there a problem? hes acting normal, eats his earthworms and pellets & wonders around the tank every once and a while.

OK, so if axies live 10-12 years and humans live 80-90 years, that make your axie the equivalent of an octogenarian. Will you still be able to father children at that age? Not many men do!

I would say if he's not producing sprematophores he's past it. Or he might have just lost the inclination....

Is this the reason for his cola`s receding though or is that a whole other issue?

I don't know, but I would imagine, like anything else, if they are not being used they could atrophy as he gets older.

My boy is about 14 years old and his latest babies are about 4 months old and are all very healthy. Their mother is the same age too but I don't know if that's typical for axies.
