Hi, guys! I haven't actually gotten my axolotl yet, but I currently have a sponge filter AND an internal waterfall filter. I have a 20 gallon tank set up with sand, hides, and plants. I intend to remove one of the two filters, but am unsure which one to remove. I'm leaning toward removing the sponge filter, but only if I figure out how to disperse the current to avoid stressing out my new critter. I'd be extremely grateful for any input.

If I was you I would remove the internal filter, sponge filters are fantastic. Not only do they create very little current in the water, but they also biologically filter the water excellently. I am curious what internal filter you have, though. The one I had did have a pretty large sponge in it and some ceramic rings, so it biologically filtered the water pretty good too. I am sure it depends on the model, though.
If you choose to leave the internal filter in though, then here are a few ways to reduce water current:
Add a spray bar to the output of the filter.
Put a sponge in/around the output of the filter.
Put plants (live or fake) where the output is.
Have the output water flow onto a decoration, like a pot.

Hope this helps!

We haven't had any problems using Aquaclear HOB filters with our axolotls. At first I put the flow on the lowest setting, mindful of what I've read about their gills. But being at the top of a 20 or 40 long tank, the water current gentles enough by the time it reaches the axolotls that we can put it all the way up to the highest setting. It's great for maintaining quality even with three fat adults. X)

Your setup sounds great, by the way!
