Here is a valuable tip... if you Salamander has been a little sick, and now worries you by looking a bit bloated (and you post a message about it and no one answers but you still belive in the forum enough to offer some this advice) and you worry and you worry...

Then one day you find that same salamander seemingly squished underneath a rock in the terrarium.

Now you REALLY think it is all over as you frantically remove the rock, only to find her smiling at you (and kind of gasping for air a bit)

What to do?

You lose it.

You pick her up (gently and with clean hands and lots of moss so you are not touching her skin) and let her know in no uncertian terms that this behavior is entirely unacceptable, and that you are ablosutley SICK of worring about her so there are some new rules.

NO getting bloated.

NO getting stuck underneath rocks.

NO refusing food after you have not eaten in a while.

NO getting me worried ever again!

And it will work. Because after that, she happily stayed in the appropriate hide (I fixed the rock problem too) and not only ate, but CHASED DOWN a slug that I found for her.

And she does not look bloated today.

You are welcome.

well, dang. Funny how they can get us going. If talking to doesn't work, you can always attempt a mild spanking with a limp earthworm

I think I will try this next time I have an issue with my newts...

Back on topic though, I am glad that your little guy is doing better :D

Haha... earthworm... that was funny.

It is STILL working - she looks better than ever and is having fun exploring her terrarium - she found the new cave that was created when I fixed the rock situation. I saw her in there today, with dirt all over her face - she looks so cute like that.

Her skin looks good, no bloating at all.

None of the wierd wrinkling either.

It really is a 'put em in the fridge' sucess story.

I would highly recommend it. She was in there four days and I kept the subtrate very moist, wet really, so the fridge would not dry her out.

I would also caution anyone who may be lax about the temps to take it seriously, I thought she was fine and I almost killed the little girl.

Thanks for posting.
