Hello all! I have six axolotl larvae housed together. They were laid on Thanksgiving and hatched about two weeks or so ago.

They're not quite an inch long yet, and was wondering when a good time to separate them would be.

Thanks!

When there is a size difference basically :D
If one is 1/2" and the other 1" id defo be separating them.

It not only depends on age and size, but the space you have and the temperament of the larvae. I have never kept my larvae individually, they have always been in groups of 8-12 in large 5L tubs, then in 60L tanks. I have had very few issues, only a very few incidents of nipping, and then only at feeding time when they all jostle for position in front of the turkey baster!

But yes, if there is a significant difference in size it would be best to separate according to size. I have 2 tanks for larvae - 4"+ in one tank, smaller ones in the other. If they are all the same size they should be fine together if they have enough space - 6 in a 5L tub should be fine at under an inch.

I haven't noticed any nipping at each other just yet. I have them in a rectangular Tupperware container at the moment, and when I notice differences in sizes I'll be sure to separate them!

Thanks!

I found as soon as their back legs started to grow thats when the nipping started for me. I had to seperate all of mine because there were a few injuries(all recovered perfectly from them)

I noticed today that they have front arm buds. So maybe I'll go ahead and start to put them in separate bins.

Mine are now at 2.5-2 weeks old. All have front buds/toes developing. Still no nipping, but I feed them plenty.

Mike, how'd you get yours to grow so fast? Mine are 2 and 3 weeks old and only 1/2 inch to an inch in length. What temp do you keep your water at? Does that have any affect on growth rate? My water is always around 60c.

Mine are room temp, but that might mean 62-68f. Will measure tonight. Hatched 15-19 Dec, just noticed most have rear leg buds. A few are smaller, most over 1". I do end up with lots of dead BBS, so a lot of food.
