The tank is bigger than shown on the picture, I know it could be bigger.

This is one of the few times that all five of them are active, normally only 2 of them are walking in my tank and the other sleeping.

How big is the tank? A 20 gal?

I had two of my Larger Tigers in a 27 long (36x12x15") and that was just enought, but they kept growing and then I had a few more get brought to me just after I moved them to a 48x24x15" terrarium.

I Have the 5 together now, and the terrariums is just big enough for the 5. If I get any more Tigers, I'll put them in a large Rubber maid bin or something until I get another terrarium of the same size made. Mind you all my Tigers are over 10" now, so they need the room, any smaller and it would be very cramped for them.

Hoi Chris,
Beautiful creatures!. I am glad you removed the sphagnum moss and replaced it with something else.

As far as space goes, sometimes the big plastic storage boxes they sell in Praxis, or Hema are also suitable for keeping them. They are not too transparent but then again it is meant to be for practical keeping rather than decorative.

Greetings,
Terry

My tank is 70x40x40 cm, my biggest tigers will not grow much larger I think.. I am planning a bigger tank allready, but they are fine how it is right now, thats for sure

From the sounds of it I will be using my spare Rubbermaid (it's about 30x18x18 inches) that I have. I talked to someone I know, he has a friend that wants to get rid of the two Tigers he has

BTW I was listing my tank sizes in inches. In cm they work out to 91.5x30x38cm for the 27 gal long, and the other is 122x61x38cm.

The other two will be in the bin until I get the other tank made.

Christian, what substrate is that? I have been trying to decide what to use when my larvae grow up...

about 60% from the bottem is covered by special amphibian substrate(reptibark they call it) and 40% is covered by cocofibre, that's where they always dig tunnels in.

On the top I placed spaghnum moss, and a big stone, some other type of moss(name??) and the rest is covered by the green moss you see on the picture, they don't need hiding places because mine dig their own tunnel to hide.

Chris,
The other moss you see is what we call in dutch kussentjesmos or pillow/ cushion moss. They are usually found in broadleaf forest floors ( loofbossen) and some of these moss clumps can be very VERY old. I once recorded one of these cushion moss to be at least one hundred years old!

I use a few of these mosses together with star moss (sterrenmos) for my marbled newts when they are in their terrestrial stage.

Hey John,

I was told by a park ranger about how certain mosses grow in the nature monuments we have here. Some clumps of mosses were estimated to be even older than the first world war, and more.

Now, I do not know myself how the age of moss is calculated nor how they do it. Am merely passing on what was told to me. In Malaysia however, I learned that the age of certain lichen types could be measured by its diameter (again rough estimate).

Then again, I'm no moss expert

Terry, sounds very interesting. Perhaps I'll have to research into that. Thanks!

On the picture: I have 3 Tiger's from the U.S.A. and 2 german CB Tiger Salamanders
