I have a tiger named monster and I live in Utah. It's starting to get cooler outside and my house gets pretty cold so I was just wondering what I need to do to get him ready for the winter. I usually keep his tank at about 70 degrees. I'm going to try to keep it about 65 to 70 all winter but does he need anything else? I've also noticed that he likes to dig now and hang out in his cave. I know he's ok because he still gets in the water to eat...he hates dirty worms. So Is he going to hibernate? I asked someone at the pet shop but he just told me that if he is in the house he will be fine. Any help is greatly appreciated because I'm new to salamanders and want to take really good care of him. Thank you!

I keep my boy in the basement to keep him cool, the temp sits at about 68 to 70 degrees and mine has never hibernated. I've never did anything extra for my tiger, he's eaten the same throughout winter. Actually it seems like its the summertime when my tiger's appetite goes down for some reason. In early spring he tends to slow down on eating and get restless, as if he's feeling the urge to find a pool somewhere and find some pretty girls, especially when it is wet and humid outside. When I open the window to my room, it makes him circle around in his cage. Its rather interesting behavior.

Salamanders don't hibernate, in the scientific sense. They go through a process called brumation. But it's not necessary to recreate this in captivity. Your salamander should be just fine in the house. I wouldn't take any extra measures to keep his tank warm though, like adding a heat lamp. That's a big no!

Thanks for the help guys!
