Well, Now I know Leon is a Tiger Salamander I've been searching the net for information on him. I know what type of tank, substrate, etc I need for him when he metamorphoses, but I can't find what the signs are of metamorphosis. Just what will he look like as he changes? I'm new to salamanders (obviously) and so I have no idea and I want to know so I don't assume he's sick or something when it's just him changing.

I've had him for almost a month now, bought him from a pet store. Reading around I've found people have them change about a month to 3 months after getting them because of the stress of retail. His gills seem shorter, but nothing is really happening to his tail. Plus the main skin part of the gills look faintly greyer than before. If he isn't changing, do you know what would be wrong with him?

If it isn't change, I'll give info on his habitat so ya'll can help me. He's in a purely aquatic setup right now. I feed him bloodworms, occationally dried shrimp, and he tends to eat the small feeder fish, plus the food for them. He chomps at the live plants in there, but doesn't actually eat them. There's a water filter in there that I change about once a week. I change out a portion of the water about once every week or two. He also has some hiding places set up. I found a floating island thing that sticks to the side of the tank so he something to climb onto when he starts getting ready to change so I know to start changing the tank around for him. He does poke at that sometimes, but doesn't actually try to get on it.

Metamorphosis should be fairly noticeable once it starts happening; you shouldn't have a problem identifying it. The gills shrink considerably, the eyes begin to protrude more, the tail fin will shrink, and the salamander should begin gulping air from the water's surface more frequently. If you check in the tiger salamander or the gallery section of the forum, you may find some pictures of other peoples morphing tigers.

Also, on a side note, feeder fish are not a recommended food source for tigers. They often carry disease and can nibble at your tiger salamanders gills. The fish food is not formulated for salamanders and may not be all that great either. Try earthworms ( along with the bloodworms; sals like varied diets), they are highly nutritious and readily accepted by nearly every species of salamander. Good luck!:D

I'll go pick up some earthworms for him then. ^.^

I added an air pump 'cause so many of the forum posts as I've been wandering deeper into the site recommend them for tiger salamander larvae. And I just realized I didn't mention he was a larvae in the first post... Well, it seems like you understood anyway. ^.^;;;

I just recently got 2e tigers ~ 1 month ago. They are both morphing now. Watch for when they start to shed, gills shrink, and loss of appetite. I thought I had 2 axies that were sick until I joined this forum. My male, Darwin" looks a lot like your tiger. I'm still learning also.
