So here are some pics of a "second level" that I made for my 20 gallon recently. Made it out of polycarbonate and artificial turf. Still not 100% settled on the arrangements, but this is how I have it now

How does the artificial turf work out in a tank? Looks great, would it be a good substrate? Do you just silicone it on?

Thanks, yeah I made sure the edges were rounded off. I honestly don't know if the turf would be be a good substrate for the entire tank but I don't see why not! The stuff i used is made for outdoors so it won't break down and yes, I used silicone to glue it and then I let it dry and soak in a separate container of water to get any possible chemicals off.
