Thinking about getting an axolotl

So, for an axolotl, what size tank would work? would a twenty gallon long work? I only plan on getting one, unless two is better. Also, I plan on using two duetto filters. Will that work? I plan on feeding them a staple of thawed frozen bloodworm cubes, along with occasional pellets. Of course he will get different thing from time to time. Another thing, how long do axolotls live?

thanks in advance

ideal size tank for 1 axie is around 2ft but a lot of people keep 1 axie in 1.5ft tanks with no problems at all. not sure what the filters are like but as a general rule, as long as there isnt too much water movement then the filter is fine. also may want to make a spray bar if you havnt got 1. frozen blood worm (in my oppinion) is the easiest and cheapest food (without home breeding) to get hold of.
as for age, expect it to live for 15-25 years with posibility of living longer.

i hope ive got that all correct. maybe 1 of the resident experts could elaborate a bit.

I have the same tank. I use a Fluval 2 plus filter love it no problems. you can change the flow on it. Got mine at Petsmart for about 30.00 I think. You can get 2 close to the same size. Live plants are great they help keep the water in good shape.

ok, so it would be fine in the 20 long? I don't have it yet, but soon will.

Now, in your guys' opinion, are axies fun pets?

Yeah it would be fine. Cycle the tank first dont use gravel. use sand or a bare floor.

where is a good place to get one? is there any online breeders?

I would try local pet shops first. call around or do a search. Sometimes shipping can cause alot of stress on the little guys. I know some are out there some ware. You can post it on the wanted section what you are looking for.

I live in a place where the pet stores barely have any animals other than fish(a good thing). Shipping is the way i got most of my animals. I may not even get one, i just want to explore the possibilities.

I want 2 more no one here has them I cant ship them into CA. So I have to find one in CA if I do I will let you know.

One axie in a 20-long is perfect. I think one Duetto filter is enough. If keeping the tank temperature low is an issue (and it usually is, unless you keep it in the basement), a waterfall filter (that hangs on the back) or a mini-canister filter is actually better as they generate less heat in the water.

This might help:

I don't have a problem. I live in Michigan, and they are native here, so the temps are fine. plus i keep them in the basement. Jennewt, do you know of a place to get an axie online, besides that place. I looked at the classified already.

The link I gave lists at least 4 different places... what do you have against all of them?

I have a 2 foot (I think it's a 15 gallon) and one axolotl. I have an Aqua One Waterfall filter (about 400l/ph) and it's fine. I also have a round airstone hidden.

We very sadly lost our beautiful axolotl, Charlie, today. He became extremely stressed after an out of the blue hot day (29 C) and never recovered. We have all been reading as much as we can as we feel dreadful. We tried cylcling ice bottles but we didn't save him. Someone mentioned tank chillers and I would love to know more about them. Does anyone out there have one? Are they easily sourced? The pet-shops we tried don't even know of them. It is all too late for Charlie but we would like to know when/if we feel more competent and brave enough to try again. (Will NOT do so unless we can keep the water cool.)

Hogan Clan.

Stephanie, if you start a new thread on looking for chillers in Australia or search the forum for homemade chillers using the search function above, you might get more help. Chillers are expensive, but well worth it and can cost up to $500+ for a good one.
