my axies have had a string of health problems over the past few months like anchor worms and fungus to mention a couple. last week i notices tias gills were curling over at the end. its gradually been getting worse and now another one of my axies has got the curly gills too! the water current is bearly noticable so i dont think it could be that upsetting them. any ideas?

Nitrate is sometimes high in tap water right out of the tap. Test your tap water for nitrate to find out if its that high naturally or if it is being produced in the aquarium.

Nitrate is a by product of nitrite. Since your nitrite reading is 1 (should be zero) part of the elevated nitrate reading is being caused by the nitrite.

I do not know how adversely axolotls are effected by nitrate levels. 25.5 is not a bad reading for a tropical fish aquarium. It would cause algae growth.

Did you recently do a large water change or substrate cleaning?

I wonder if the gill damage could be from the salt baths for their previous health problems? Salt damages gills I wonder how soon the damage would be seen?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

i recently changed the substrate completely. i decided not to do the salt baths in the end just in case i did it wrong. ill try and get some pics of the curls in the next couple of days.

anyone got any ideas? they dont seem destressed or anything. do you think i should do a slime scraping? i do that with my fish. might that help?

I think it might be from the combination of things that have happened to them recently. They had anchor worms then fungus then you changed all the substrate. I think you said you were plucking out the anchor worms? That would be another stressor.

Maybe it is just the total of all things that is catching up to them?

Are the fungus and anchor worms cleared up now?

yeah, its all gone now. ill just keep an eye on them, see how they go. if they start to look like goldielocks ill make another appeal. lol. thanks for the help

Hmm, that happened to my Dragoon (baby axie who died on 20th Jan from Velvet) Mum never bought me any Ammonium or Nitrate testing kits just pH.

Vanessa - Ammonia and nitrite are very important to test for as they can be lethal.

They offer kits that have all of them in the same box so you don't have to buy them separately. You might want to check into something like that.

Hmm... I can't seem to find it though... there was this huge box which has a lot of test kits in it but there's a couple like Iron test kit that I probably don't need. I'll have to have a peep in the Chemistry page to look.
