I posted a while back about a sick fire-belly baby. He eventually died, as expected. However, now I have a new issue. I have seen newts in this store with rot and other problems and eventually they all get sick, die, and a new shipment comes in. This time, they got all fire-bellies, and one "Orange newt," as it was labeled. I couldn't help but to rescue him from certain doom. I would rather try my best and know that he was happy for a while, than watch him rot visit after visit.

So, I am left with my one fire-belly, and this "orange newt," which from the care sheets on this webpage I have deemed to be a rough-skinned newt. She is significantly larger but I think things seem to be okay. I would like to know others thoughts on housing these two together?

Also I read that Rough-skinned newts can be either aquatic or terrestrial as adults, and I have an aquatic setup with floating corkbark, and many plants that are right at water level for resting with one's face out. Do you guys think this is acceptable?

hi Alli. i am a newbie but when i was young i did have 2 california newts which may be what your orange newt is.? From what i understand they too may be either land or water prone, and mine prefered water as well. Just make sure you dont have a paddletail newt because they are mean. And many here will tell you that mixing species is always risky. (That is why i have 3 tanks already!) Good luck.

Did you put the oregon newt, Rough skin, in quarantee before you put it in the fire belly tank. Mixing species is bad, but putting a new animal directly into your established tank might be worse. It might bring deadly pathogen to your fire belly.
