I just got little Epsilon today and his/her gills are flipped forward. The temperature is too high. How do I lower it without using ice? (oh no, imagine the summer)

do you mean you don't want to use ice on its own? because i freeze a plastic water bottle and float it in the tank? that cools my tank... a few people have said they put their axy in a container and put it in the fridge as long as it doesnt go below 5 degrees... is there a reason why ice is not good??

is your tank away from windows? do you keep it in low lighting?

The lights are turned off, heat's turned off in the apartment, AND Epsilon's more or less in the dark. Stupid insulation... I don't want to risk ice because then it melts and the temperature goes back up.

Poor Epsilon...

having a fan blowing over the water can drop the temp a few degrees... its not the best but i'm still learning stuff too!

i'm sure someone on this site will come up with something good... they usually do!!!

maybe you should try the fridge just til he/she is not stressed, and in the meantime see if you can drop the tank temp with a fan... just make sure it doesn't get too cold in the fridge... between 5 - 10 should be ok.... but the poor little guy needs to de-stress most of all! good luck matey!!!

I got a better thermometer and it seems the temp. went down to a comfortable level. I also turned the filter output towards the wall. S/he seems a lot happier now! I take pictures as soon as I find my camera.

thats good, i would just put a fan over the tank that works well. cant wait to see some pics!

Well, being as you're in New York, I bet opening a window would cool it down pretty quick! Fans work great! I managed to keep my tanks down around 75F all summer when it was 90+ outside.
