I have to disperse the flow in my tank before I get my axolotl. I have a HOB filter and the waterfall digs furrows in the sand directly underneath it. I know the best thing to redirect the flow to the back wall of the tank and spread it out, but what if I made a slate shelter directly under the filter? Wouldn't the flow bounce off the "roof" back to the surface and then spread out, so the middle/bottom of the tank would mostly be undisturbed? Or do I not understand flow well?

I'm just trying to come up with more attractive ways to break it up that are within my craftiness. I generally have a good aesthetic eye but am vastly unskilled at DIY. :lame:

You can cheat like I did when I had a HOB and get one of those turtle floats (with suction cups to keep them in place) and put it under the waterfall.

You could make a hide out of a broken clay pot (sand off all rough edges - it is quick work with coarse sand paper) and put that under the worst of the down-draft.

If you come up with something esthetic and easy, we'd love to see pictures.

Ouu!I really like the turtle float idea! I think I might take that and modify, depending on what I can find locally.

Thank you!!
